2011 Bonga Spill: N-Delta Communities Withdraw Suits Against Shell

Over 200 Itsekiri and Ijaw communities in the Niger Delta affected by the Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company, SNEPCo, 2011 Bonga Field crude oil spill have agreed to withdraw the suits against the oil company to facilitate payment of compensation to them.
The resolution was taken at a peace meeting held by representatives of the affected communities in Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states in Warri, Delta State.
It was gathered that SNEPCo had already conceded to paying compensation to the communities along the coastlines whose fishing rights were impacted by the spill, but was uncomfortable with the avalanche of court actions against it.
Chairman/coordinator of the impacted communities, Mr. Monday Francis, disclosed at the Warri meeting that the Presidency intervened in the feud between Shell and the oil communities and part of the agreement reached at the meeting was to withdraw the court cases. [Vanguard]
