Commitee on Finance awaits the Minister’s response. The attention of the House Committee on Finance has been drawn to a comment in response to reporters’ questions credited to the Honourable Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in which she likened the 50 questions on the state of the economy posed to her by the Committee to an examination. She was also reported to have said she would need time to respond to some of the questions raised. We view this as a welcome development as it denotes a vindication of the decision we took when she appeared before the Committee on December 19, 2013. The Committee knew that she would need time to answer the questions. The Minister appears to be taking the memories of Nigerians for granted. This was the Minister who walked into the meeting with the Committee and drew everyone’s sympathy the moment she feebly announced that she was not feeling well. Isn’t it curious then that when she was not feel

Unbelievable Even Oprah Can’t Work With Lindsey Lohan? 15:58 | 10.01.2014 Did Oprah Winfrey Kick Lindsey Lohan’s TV Show Out Of OWN Network due to non coorperation? Oprah-Lindsey-Lohan-TV-Show-01 Entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey has finally agreed to air film star Lindsey Lohan’s new reality TV show on OWN Network but not without hesitation. The very warm TV host reportedly had issues with the actress’ indecisive work ethics. But even though the difficulties, the show is set to debut on March 9, 2014. In a new clip off the show, screened for TV critics on Thursday, Oprah said, “This is just what everyone warned me would happen (working with Lindsey). And it is.” Further reports claim the film star refused to take part in the scheduled filming and Winfrey told her point blac, “My truth is, I really do want you to win … but if that isn’t what you want, I’m okay with that. I will tell these guys [producers] to pack up and leave today.” Lohan later agreed, “I know this is my last sho

21-year-old man, Mansur Tanko, on Friday, burnt himself to death in Jalingo, after a disagreement with his father, Tanko Mijinyawa, over marriage. The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident and said the Jalingo Division of the police had commenced investigation into the matter. Tanko, according to an eyewitness, Alhaji Jibrin Bala, set himself ablaze because his family refused to approve his wedding with a girl, Blessing. The eyewitness told sympathisers that Tanko introduced Blessing to his father as his proposed wife, but the father kicked against the union, describing it as a bad choice. Bala said efforts by the father to convince his son to look for another girl failed, as he insisted that he could not survive without Blessing. The eyewitness added that Tanko suddenly left his father and went to a corner in the compound, where he poured petrol on his body and set himself ablaze. “When we suddenly saw fire, everybody ran toward the corn

Third Republic governor of Anambra state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife yesterday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately suspend the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi over the alleged false alarm he raised concerning the non-remittance of $49.8 billion crude oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, into the federation account. The CBN governor has since clarified that only about $10.8 billion is yet to be accounted for; a figure the government-run oil corporation insists is not missing. Ezeife made the call yesterday while speaking to Saturday Vanguard in Abuja. “I am surprised. I didn’t know that the report of the CBN indicating that a whopping sum of $49.8 billion was missing from the federation account was false. That gives the impression that the CBN Governor is working against the government he is serving. He tried to make President Jonathan look bad in the eye of the public. The money involved was so huge that to lie about it is a serious affair”, Ezeife said. He continued: “Irrespective of who is involved or my personal relationship with them, given the present situation, the President should act presidentially. There is no way the Governor of CBN could be trading words with the President. He should be suspended immediately from office. If this had happened under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the CBN Governor wouldn’t have been allowed to enter his office again after making a bold statement that the President could not remove him from office. ”I read the second statement made by the CBN about the alleged missing billions of dollars but there was no mention of the fact that the Governor’s earlier claim was a mistake. The statement simply mentioned the role of the CBN. That kind of mistake is impossible. It was a deliberate action to impugn the President and his government. This is not a matter of being a Christian, humble or simple; there are presidential powers that must be respected”, he said. The former governor noted that the incident involving Jonathan and Sanusi created the impression in the media that the president can never bite even though he has teeth. According to him, “Sometimes the President needs to exercise his powers. This time around, even though the President won’t bite anybody, he needs to show his teeth and perhaps bite. Falsehood is not acceptable. The present case won’t affect the economy”. Ezeife added that “Even though Sanusi insisted that $10 billion of the sum NNPC ought to have paid into the federation account is still missing, the difference between approximately $50 billion and $10 billion is like the difference between night and day. My position is that his later admission that it was a mistake and now said it was only $10 billion is like the action of a sinking man who is ready to hold on to any straw to prevent him from going under”.

mother accused of slashing her two children’s throats and lighting their Massachusetts home on fire will try an insanity defense in her upcoming trial. Lawyers for Tanicia Goodwin have also filed motions to toss out evidence that would be used against her, including: Goodwin’s clothing that was soaked with lighter fluid, samples of blood and lighter fluid that were taken from off her body, and statements that she made to police in which she repeatedly said “sorry,” the Salem News reports. The defense said on Tuesday that their expert has determined Goodwin wasn’t mentally competent, but resisted requests from the prosecution to turn over that report now. At some point, the prosecution will gain access to that medical file and will have their own psychiatrist examine Goodwin. The 28-year-old’s attorneys allege that police did not immediately inform her of her Miranda rights and that she was not mentally competent at the time of the March 2011 attack. Her then-3-year-old daughter an

Lawmakers’ Questions: They Have Given Me Exams – Okonjo-Iweala

Minister of Finance and the Co-ordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has said the 50 questions raised by members of the House of Representatives which they expect her to answer before the 2014 budget could be considered was like writing an examination. Fielding questions from State House correspondents, shortly after she attended a presentation of a report on “14 Years of Strategic Partnership between the DFID, UK and the Debt Management Office – Nigeria” presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Okonjo-Iweala said some of the issues raised were weighty, and as such, she needed some time to be able to tackle them. The House of Representatives had threatened not to consider the 2014 budget until the minister provides answers to their 50 questions on the management of the economy. “You know I am taking exams. They have given me exams and I am sitting it and at some point, we have to come out of the exams room. Some of the questions are very weighty and you k
