Commitee on Finance awaits the Minister’s response. The attention of the House Committee on Finance has been drawn to a comment in response to reporters’ questions credited to the Honourable Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in which she likened the 50 questions on the state of the economy posed to her by the Committee to an examination. She was also reported to have said she would need time to respond to some of the questions raised. We view this as a welcome development as it denotes a vindication of the decision we took when she appeared before the Committee on December 19, 2013. The Committee knew that she would need time to answer the questions. The Minister appears to be taking the memories of Nigerians for granted. 21-year-old man, Mansur Tanko, on Friday, burnt himself to death in Jalingo, after a disagreement with his father, Tanko Mijinyawa, over marriage. The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident and said the Jalingo Division of the police had commenced investigation into the matter. Tanko, according to an eyewitness, Alhaji Jibrin Bala, set himself ablaze because his family refused to approve his wedding with a girl, Blessing. The eyewitness told sympathisers that Tanko introduced Blessing to his father as his proposed wife, but the father kicked against the union, describing it as a bad choice. Bala said efforts by the father to convince his son to look for another girl failed, as he insisted that he could not survive without Blessing. Third Republic governor of Anambra state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife yesterday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately suspend the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi over the alleged false alarm he raised concerning the non-remittance of $49.8 billion crude oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, into the federation account. The CBN governor has since clarified that only about $10.8 billion is yet to be accounted for; a figure the government-run oil corporation insists is not missing. The defense said on Tuesday that their expert has determined Goodwin wasn’t mentally competent, but resisted requests from the prosecution to turn over that report now. Although the weather is not ideal, tourists are still flocking to the iconic landmark because the ice surrounding the falls is an unusual and beautiful sight. A polar vortex is caused by slowing of the jet stream. In its usual position, the stream prevents arctic air from traveling south. However, as the jet stream slows down, its path is altered. Within the last week, arctic air moved into the Midwest United States, bringing dangerously low temperatures and wind chill factors. As a result, much of the region is now covered in ice, and Niagara Falls is no exception. Although water is still flowing through portions of the falls, much of the surrounding landscape is frozen. Workers in the power sector have threatened to stop the supply of electricity across the country by Tuesday, January 14, to protest against the federal government’s refusal to conclude the payment of workers’ entitlements following the privatisation of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). The industrial action follows the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) to the federal government in December last year to conclude all labour-related issues in the sector. Announcing the strike at a press conference in Lagos, General Secretary of NUEE, Mr Joe Ajaero, lamented that two months after the handover of the assets of the defunct PHCN, the labour issues are yet to be concluded. He insisted that no staff of the defunct PHCN was fully paid his or her entitlements, calling on the government to tell the public where the money that had been released for the payment of the benefits had disappeared.
